Preview

The Arizona Diamondbacks head to Fenway Park on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, for a 7:10 PM ET clash with the Boston Red Sox. Merrill Kelly gets the ball for Arizona against Boston's Ranger Suarez in what shapes up as a quality pitching matchup in one of baseball's most storied venues. With the Diamondbacks away from Chase Field, this is a road test that will tell us plenty about where this club stands heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Probable Starters: Merrill Kelly vs. Ranger Suarez

Merrill Kelly is the kind of veteran arm you want on the mound in a hostile environment like Fenway. He attacks the strike zone, sequences pitches intelligently, and doesn't beat himself. Kelly's ability to pitch deep into games is a genuine asset for a bullpen that appreciates every out he can record.

Suarez is a crafty left-hander who knows how to keep hitters off-balance. Arizona's lineup will need to stay disciplined against him, work counts, and avoid chasing anything off the edges of the plate. Fenway's Green Monster plays tricks on visiting offenses, and Suarez has the guile to exploit any lapses in plate approach.

Arizona Diamondbacks Lineup

  • Ildemaro Vargas, 2B
  • Corbin Carroll, RF
  • Gabriel Moreno, DH
  • Geraldo Perdomo, SS
  • Tim Tawa, 1B
  • Jordan Lawlar, CF
  • James McCann, C
  • Jose Fernandez, 3B
  • Ryan Waldschmidt, LF

Boston Red Sox Lineup

  • Nick Sogard, 2B
  • Ceddanne Rafaela, CF
  • Wilyer Abreu, RF
  • Willson Contreras, 1B
  • Adley Rutschman, C
  • Caleb Durbin, 3B
  • Jarren Duran, LF
  • Andruw Monasterio, SS
  • Mickey Gasper, DH

Keys to Watch for Arizona

  • Corbin Carroll at the plate: Hitting second in the order, Carroll is the engine of this offense. If he gets on base and creates havoc, the Diamondbacks will have chances to score against Suarez early.
  • Geraldo Perdomo batting cleanup: Perdomo in the four-hole is a notable lineup construction decision. He will need to come through with runners on base if Arizona is going to put crooked numbers on the Fenway scoreboard.
  • Jordan Lawlar's development: Lawlar in center field continues to be one of the more intriguing storylines on this roster. A good night at the plate or in the field from the young shortstop-turned-outfielder keeps the buzz alive around his growth.
  • Kelly's pitch efficiency: At a venue like Fenway, keeping the Red Sox off the bases early is essential. If Kelly can work efficiently through the Boston lineup in the first three innings, Arizona's bullpen should be in a manageable position late.

Prediction

This is a tough road spot. Fenway is never easy, and Suarez gives Boston a legitimate chance to control the game from the first pitch. That said, Kelly is experienced enough to match zeros, and Arizona's lineup has the athleticism and depth to put together a crooked inning or two. Look for a tight, low-scoring game that comes down to late-inning execution. Edge: Diamondbacks 4, Red Sox 3.
